Bootle's Strand Centre commits to apprenticeship programme

Ellandi, owner of Bootle’s Strand Shopping Centre, has committed to appointing and training a retail property apprentice at the site through Retail Path, an industry-wide apprenticeship programme.
The group will roll out the apprenticeship programme for the first time at The Strand, where the apprentice will benefit from working with both centre management teams and retailers.
Mark Robinson, Ellandi property director, said: “Retail and retail property forms the heart of each community and is often the first experience that people get in the workplace – one of my first jobs was as a Saturday boy in Top Shop in Bury St Edmunds.
“The Retail Path initiative offers a structured series of stepping stones for enthusiastic and entrepreneurial youngsters to start a career in the retail industry and understand what a key role retail has on their community and the wider UK economy.”
The Retail Path is operated by the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC) Educational Trust and National Skills Academy for Retail.
Property group Hammerson piloted the scheme in 2015 and has now committed to a second year with Retail Path at Highcross Leicester shopping centre.
Hammerson’s first intake involved five apprentices, with two graduating from the scheme in December 2015 and gaining permanent roles with TM Lewin and Hotel Chocolat, respectively. The remaining three apprentices are now preparing to graduate this year into full-time employment.
Peter Drummond, chairman of the BCSC Educational Trust, said: “Retail Path’s second year is just about to begin and we’re very excited to have Ellandi commit, and Hammerson’s Highcross Leicester re-commit, to recruiting apprentices through this industry-wide apprenticeship programme.
“Their partnership with Retail Path is a stellar example of industry best practice, providing young people with a professional point of entry into the retail property industry and the opportunity to develop a rewarding career.
“We look forward to welcoming more landlords, retailers and apprentices in 2016 to Retail Path.”
