Review: Mother Mash

Posted by Jaya on 6th Nov 2012

With the weather turning darn right freezing, I know as lunch time crawls round I'm thinking about wholesome, filling and lets admit it, stodgy foods that hit the spot. After all, the body needs fuel to keep itself warm during this cold season, or at least that's my justification to, well myself.

Mother Mash is only a stones throw away from the lovely Ellandi Offices on Ganton Street and is a small narrow restaurant that specialises in, you guessed it, Mash.

So what goes with the mash I hear you ask, well at Mother Mash they believe that there are 3 steps to heaven, so you select your mash, you select either sausages or pie and then you pick your gravy. Simple as that.

The restaurant itself is simplistic with a painted brick wall and white tiles. It’s a small place with only about 4 or 5 booths and a counter along the side with stools for those not wanting to share the soul food experience with others.

Saying that it's just as good for a quick break from the office alone or for a business meeting (although its best to keep group sizes small to ensure seating). For those in more of a rush, Mother Mash also has a take away service, however it might be best to call ahead and place your order to minimise on the wait time.

When I visited I ordered the Horseradish Mash with Lamb and Rosemary Pie and the farmers gravy (Red wine, onion, smoked bacon and mushrooms).

The pie itself had an amazing flavour and the pastry was cooked to perfection with no soggy base in sight. The mash was smooth and creamy with only the most subtle hint of horseradish. The gravy was also really well made with an immense depth of flavour that really complemented the pie. Overall I left feeling very satisfied.

Mother Mash is excellent for a quick lunch or early dinner, although being a popular local spot, it might be the case that you spend more time queuing for a table than actually eating but either way, its hearty food that hits the spot and is definitely worth the wait.
